Waste to Woods: Yakalaspura Dumpsite Transformation in Raichur

Current relevance:

              Under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0 (SBM-U 2.0), the Raichur City Corporation in Karnataka has transformed the 35-acre Yakalaspura legacy dumpsite through scientific waste remediation.



Highlights:

Yakalaspura Dumpsite Remediation:

1.        The Yakalaspura dumpsite in Raichur, Karnataka, covers about 35 acres and had accumulated municipal solid waste over several decades.

2.      The dumpsite posed environmental and public-health concerns through leachate generation, foul odour and environmental pollution.

3.      Raichur City Corporation undertook scientific legacy waste remediation under SBM-U 2.0.

4.      Around 62,252 MT of legacy waste has been scientifically processed and remediated.

5.      The intervention has reclaimed nearly 22 acres of valuable urban land, reducing environmental risks and improving the surrounding landscape.


Miyawaki Forest on Reclaimed Land:

1.        Miyawaki method is a Japanese technique of ecological restoration and afforestation. It aims to create dense, native and biodiverse forests within a relatively short period.

2.      Plantation activities on the remediated land commenced on 5 June 2026.

3.      Under the concept of “Toxic Waste to Ecological Wealth,” a Miyawaki forest is being developed across approximately 5–7 acres of the reclaimed site.

4.      The initiative is being undertaken in collaboration with Security Printing and Minting Corporation of India Limited (SPMCIL) and New India Space Limited.

5.      A total of 60,000 saplings have been planted. The plantation includes bamboo and other native species.

6.      The green cover is expected to contribute to soil restoration, carbon sequestration, biodiversity enhancement and improved air quality.


Significance for Sustainable Urban Development:

1.        The project demonstrates how legacy dumpsites can be converted into productive and ecologically sustainable urban spaces.

2.      Reclamation releases valuable urban land previously occupied by accumulated waste.

3.      It integrates waste remediation with ecological restoration and sustainable land use.

4.      The initiative demonstrates the role of urban governance, strategic investment and sustained commitment to sanitation in addressing legacy waste.


Replicable Model under SBM-U 2.0:

1.         Under SBM-U 2.0, cities across India are working to transform legacy dumpsites into productive and environmentally sustainable spaces.

2.       The Yakalaspura project provides a model for combining scientific waste remediation, land reclamation and urban afforestation.

3.       It supports the broader objective of creating garbage-free and sustainable urban futures.

4.       The project illustrates how a long-standing environmental liability can be transformed into an ecological asset for the city.
