United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations
(UKMTO) came into focus after it issued an alert regarding an
attack on the Minoan Dignity while the vessel was exiting the Strait of
Hormuz. UKMTO is the primary point of contact for merchant vessels and liaison
with military forces within its reporting area.
Continents:
The area spans the maritime space between Asia
and Africa, particularly West Asia, the Horn of Africa and the northwestern
Indian Ocean.

The UKMTO maritime-security framework covers
strategically important waters including the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Arabian
Sea, Gulf of Oman, Persian Gulf and parts of the Indian Ocean.

extending this maritime corridor towards Europe.

UKMTO provides mariners and shipping
companies with verified and corroborated maritime-security information
and serves as a point of contact for emergency response.
2. Its Voluntary
Reporting Scheme (VRS) aims to enhance security, provide anti-piracy
support and help maintain freedom of navigation.
3. The
region encompasses the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb, making it
strategically important for international commercial and energy shipping.
4. Merchant
vessels are encouraged to provide initial, daily and final reports, as
well as incident and after-action reports when required.
5. UKMTO's
role has become particularly important amid evolving threats including piracy,
attacks on commercial shipping, regional military tensions and electronic
interference.
