Current relevance:
The Black Sea is in focus
because intensified Russia–Ukraine attacks on ports and shipping have severely disrupted Ukraine’s agricultural exports during its
harvest season. Since a very large share of Ukrainian grain exports moves
through Black Sea ports, the disruption has raised concerns over global grain supplies, food prices and food security, particularly for import-dependent countries.
Continent:

The Black Sea lies at the junction of Europe and Asia.

Türkiye, south of Ukraine, west of Georgia and southeast of Eastern Europe.
Bordering
Countries:

It is directly bordered by six
countries: Ukraine, Russia, Georgia,
Türkiye, Bulgaria and Romania.
Major
Rivers:

The Danube, Dnieper and Dniester are major rivers
that drain into the Black Sea.
Significance:
1.
Agricultural corridor: It is a major
export route for wheat, corn and oilseeds from Ukraine and the wider
region. In June 2026, about 90% of Ukraine’s grain, oilseed and related
exports moved through the Black Sea.
2.
Energy corridor: Black Sea ports and terminals are
important for the movement of crude oil and refined petroleum products.
3.
Global food security: Disruption of
Ukrainian grain shipments can affect supplies and prices in grain-importing
regions, particularly Africa and the Middle East.
