Cabinet approves Amendment in “Pradhan Mantri JI-VAN Yojana” for providing financial support to Advanced Biofuel Projects using lignocellulosic biomass and other renewable feedstock

Pradhan Mantri JI-VAN Yojana:

  • Launch: March 2019.
  • Objective: Promote Second Generation (2G) bioethanol production using lignocellulosic biomass (e.g., cereal straw, bagasse, forest residues).
  • Financial Support: Viability Gap Funding (VGF) with a total outlay of Rs. 1969.50 crore (2018-19 to 2023-24).
  • Implementation: Overseen by the Centre for High Technology (CHT), under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
  • Projects: Support for 12 commercial and 10 demonstration 2G Ethanol projects (divided into two phases).
  • Benefits:
    • Reduces reliance on food crops by using non-food feedstocks.
    • Contributes to lower greenhouse gas emissions.
    • Prevents biomass burning, enhancing public health and farmer income.
    • Creates jobs and advances 2G Ethanol technology.
    • Supports waste management and the Swachh Bharat Mission.
  • Background: Linked to the Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) programme, aiming for 10% ethanol blending with petrol.

Recent Updates:

  • Enhancement: The scheme now includes advanced biofuels from lignocellulosic feedstocks and supports “bolt-on” and “brownfield” projects to further boost biofuel development and contribute to India's energy security and net-zero emissions targets.
