News: The Indian Naval Submarine (INS) Shalki arrived at the port of Colombo for a two-day formal visit.

 

Whats in the news?

  • The last Indian submarine to call at Colombo was INS Karanj, which arrived on February 3 on the eve of Sri Lanka's 76th anniversary of independence.
  • In June last year, INS Vagir made a port call at Colombo.

 

INS Shalki

  • Class & Type:Shishumar-class diesel-electric submarine.
  • Commissioning Date:February 7, 1992.
  • Status:Active service as of 2024.
  • Builders:Mazagon Dock Limited in collaboration with German firm HDW.
  • Speed:
      • Surfaced: 11 knots (20 km/h)
      • Submerged: 22 knots (41 km/h)

Range: 8,000 nautical miles (15,000 km) at 8 knots (15 km/h)

 

Operational History

  • INS Shalki, launched in 1987 and commissioned in 1992, holds the distinction of being India's first indigenously built submarine.
  • It has been actively involved in various naval exercises and missions, contributing to India's maritime security.

 

INS Karanj (S23)

  • Class & Type: Kalvari-class submarine (Scorpène-class)
  • Commissioned: 10 March 2021
  • Builder: Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), Mumbai in collaboration with Naval Group, France
  • Role: Diesel-electric attack submarine designed for a range of missions including anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, mine laying, and area surveillance.

 

Specifications: Speed :20 knots (submerged), 11 knots (surfaced), Range : 6,500 nautical miles at 8 knots (snorkeling)

 

Armament

  • Torpedoes: 6 x 533 mm torpedo tubes capable of launching torpedoes and anti-ship missiles
  • Mines: Capable of carrying 30 mines in place of torpedoes
  • Missiles: Exocet SM39 anti-ship missiles
  • Stealth Technology: Incorporates advanced stealth features to reduce acoustic signatures, making it difficult to detect.
  • Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP): Future upgrades may include AIP to enhance underwater endurance.
  • Sensors and Countermeasures: Equipped with advanced sonar and electronic warfare systems to detect and counter threats effectively.
