WHY IN NEWS?

The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) will launch its ‘One Scientist-One Product’ programme on July 16 to improve research in the field of agriculture and animal husbandry.

Release of New Crop Varieties: 323 new varieties across 56 crops.

Special Varieties:

  •    289 climate-resilient varieties to withstand environmental stresses.
  •    27 bio-fortified varieties to enhance nutritional value.

 

The ‘One Scientist-One Product’ Programme

Objective: Focus and streamline research in agriculture and animal husbandry.

Goals:

 1.Enhance specialization.

 2.Improve research efficiency.

3.Accelerate development of new technologies and products.

 

ICAR’s Ambitious 100-Day Action Plan

100-100-100 Initiative:

  1.Develop 100 new seed varieties.

  2.Create 100 new farm technologies.

  3.Achieve these targets within 100 days.

 

Achievements in Bio-fortification and Climate Resilience

   Biofortified Crop Coverage:

  •    Total area under bio-fortified varieties: 16 million hectares.

    Breakdown by crop:

  1.     Wheat: 13 Mha
  2.     Rice: 0.5 Mha
  3.     Pearl millet: 1.5 Mha
  4.     Lentil: 0.50 Mha
  5.     Mustard: 1.0 Mha
