DODDAKALLASANDRA LAKE – GEOGRAPHY

News: In Frames | A flurry of feathers in a drying lake

What's in the news?

The Doddakallasandra Lake in Bengaluru, reeling under the effect of the drought gripping the whole of Karnataka, has become a feeding spot for many species of birds.

Doddakallasandra Lake:

Doddakallasandra Lake is considered as a man-made lake, located off Kanakapura Road in Bangalore.

It is a 21.16-acre water body that has undergone rejuvenation efforts by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) in recent years.

Significance:

The lake is surrounded by a diverse range of flora and fauna, hosting 354 trees of 42 species, 43 species of plants and shrubs, 37 butterfly species, and 71 bird species, including 11 migratory ones and two near-threatened species.

Uniqueness:

The name "Doddakallasandra" is derived from the Kannada language, which means "buffalo pond".

The name likely refers to a natural pond in the area that was used as a source of drinking water for buffalos in the past.
