 Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN):

  1. Establishment:
    • Founded: 1967 with the ASEAN Declaration (Bangkok Declaration).
    • Founding members: Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand.
    • Current members: Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia.
  2. Objectives:
    • Promote intergovernmental cooperation in economic, political, security, military, educational, and sociocultural sectors.
    • Maintain close cooperation with international and regional organizations.
    • Promote regional peace, stability, justice, and adherence to UN principles.
    • Accelerate economic growth, social progress, and cultural development.
  3. Key Facts:
    • Motto: “One Vision, One Identity, One Community”.
    • Headquarters: Jakarta, Indonesia.
    • ASEAN Day: 8th August.
    • Chairmanship: Rotates annually based on alphabetical order of member states' English names.
    • 3rd largest market in the world.
    • Major partner of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation.
  4. ASEAN Plus Three:
    • Includes ASEAN, China, South Korea, and Japan.
  5. ASEAN Plus Six:
    • Includes ASEAN Plus Three, India, Australia, and New Zealand.
    • Basis for the East Asia Summit (EAS) and the planned East Asia Community.

About India’s Act East Policy:

  1. Launch:
    • Introduced in 2014 to enhance economic, strategic, and cultural ties with the Asia-Pacific region.
  2. Objectives:
    • Intensify relations with countries concerned about China's influence.
    • Develop India's Northeastern Region (NER) as a gateway to Southeast Asia.
  3. Evolution:
    • Continuation of the earlier 'Look East' policy, focusing on a more proactive approach.
