U.K sign and exchange letters for Young Professionals Scheme
What's in the news?
● The
Governments of India and the U.K. marked Pravasi Bharatiya Divas on January 9,
2023 by kicking off the Young Professionals Scheme.
Young Professionals Scheme:
Key features:
● Young
Indians and Britans would be able to
travel to each other’s countries and either work, study, or visit, for two
years.
● The
scheme allows for exchange visas for up to 3,000
individuals per year.
● The
scheme will be reciprocal.
● It
was launched by the United Kingdom amid the huge labor shortages in the
country.
● The
initiative will strengthen the Mobility
Partnership and Migration between the countries as agreed in 2021.
Significance:
● The
U.K. has more links with India than almost any country in the Indo-Pacific
region, with Indians comprising almost a quarter of all international students
in the U.K. and Indian investment in the U.K. supporting 95,000 jobs in the
country.
● The
U.K. government called the launch of the program a “significant moment” for the
U.K.-India relationship but also the U.K.’s links to the Indo Pacific.
● The
Young Professionals Scheme offers a unique opportunity for young Indians and
Britons to gain international experience and expand their cultural horizons.
● It
also has the potential to strengthen ties between the two countries by
fostering cultural exchange and building networks of professionals.
