YOUNG PROFESSIONALS SCHEME - INTERNATIONAL

News: India, U.K sign and exchange letters for Young Professionals Scheme

What's in the news?

The Governments of India and the U.K. marked Pravasi Bharatiya Divas on January 9, 2023 by kicking off the Young Professionals Scheme.

Young Professionals Scheme:

Key features:

Young Indians and Britans would be able to travel to each other’s countries and either work, study, or visit, for two years.

The scheme allows for exchange visas for up to 3,000 individuals per year.

       The scheme will be reciprocal.

It was launched by the United Kingdom amid the huge labor shortages in the country.

The initiative will strengthen the Mobility Partnership and Migration between the countries as agreed in 2021.

Significance:

The U.K. has more links with India than almost any country in the Indo-Pacific region, with Indians comprising almost a quarter of all international students in the U.K. and Indian investment in the U.K. supporting 95,000 jobs in the country.

The U.K. government called the launch of the program a “significant moment” for the U.K.-India relationship but also the U.K.’s links to the Indo Pacific.

The Young Professionals Scheme offers a unique opportunity for young Indians and Britons to gain international experience and expand their cultural horizons.

It also has the potential to strengthen ties between the two countries by fostering cultural exchange and building networks of professionals.
