News: PM to inaugurate TRIFED’s Aadi Mahotsav in Delhi on Feb. 16

 

What's in the news?

       Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Aadi Mahotsav festival of the Tribal Co-Operative Marketing Development Federation of India Ltd. (TRIFED) on February 16 in New Delhi’s Major Dhyan Chand Stadium.

 

Aadi Mahotsav:

       The Aadi Mahotsav is TRIFED’s flagship event.

       It will feature an exhibition-cum-sale of tribal handicrafts, handloom, paintings, jewellery, cane and bamboo, pottery, food, natural products, and tribal cuisine among other artefacts in over 200 stalls.

 

Features:

       The Mahotsav, which connects tribal artisans, craftsmen and women to a direct market in large metro cities and State capitals, will be held in New Delhi from February 16 to February 27.

       This year’s event has been arranged around the theme of “A Celebration of Crafts, Culture, Cuisine and Commerce”.

       TRIFED is engaging with top designers to ensure quality and contemporary designs in tribal products, at the same time maintaining their originality.

       It also emphasis on production of products by tribal communities can “play a big role in combating the challenge of global warming”.

       The event will showcase a Tribal Freedom Fighters’ Gallery, arranged by the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes; cultural (song and dance) performances by over 500 tribal artists; stalls showcasing and publicising information about Eklavya Model Residential Schools and the National Scheduled Tribe Finance and Development Corporation.

 

TRIFED:

       The Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India (TRIFED) came into existence in 1987.

 

Administrative Control:

       It is a national-level apex organization functioning under the administrative control of the Ministry of Tribal affairs.

 

Headquarters:

       TRIFED has its Head Office located in New Delhi and has a network of 13 Regional Offices.

 

Objectives:

       Its core objective is to institutionalize trade of Minor Forest Produce (MFP) and Surplus Agriculture Produce (SAP) collected or cultivated by tribals as they are heavily dependent on these natural products for their livelihood.

 

Features:

       TRIFED also works as an agency to the FCI for procurement of Wheat and Rice.

       In 2021, the Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India (TRIFED), under the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, launched “Sankalp se Siddhi” - Village and Digital Connect Drive.

       The main aim of this drive is to activate the Van Dhan Vikas Kendras (VDVKs) in the villages.

 

Functions:

       It mainly undertakes two functions viz. Minor Forest Produce (MFP) development and Retail Marketing and Development.

 

1. Minor Forest Produce (MFP) development:

       An important source of livelihood for tribal people are non-wood forest products, generally termed 'Minor Forest Produce (MFP)'.

       This includes all non-timber forest produce of plant origin and include bamboo, canes, fodder, leaves, gums, waxes, dyes, resins and many forms of food including nuts, wild fruits, honey, lac, tusser etc.

       MFP also has strong linkage to women’s financial empowerment as most of the Minor Forest Produces are collected and used/sold by women.

 

2. Retail Marketing and Development:

       TRIFED aims to improve the livelihood of the tribal communities by creating a sustainable market and creating business opportunities for tribal people.

       It involves exploring marketing possibilities for marketing of tribal products on a sustainable basis, creating brand and providing other necessary services.
