News: NATO signs $700 mn Stinger Missile contract in push for defence boost

       NATO has signed a nearly $700 million contract to have member countries produce more Stinger missiles, one of many steps the alliance is pressing at its summit in Washington to get each country to boost its own weapons production capabilities.

 

Stinger Missiles:

       The Stinger is a portable surface-to-air defense system that can be carried and fired by troops or mounted to a vehicle and used as short-range defense against aircraft.

Aim:

       Stinger missiles are primarily designed to engage and destroy aircraft, including helicopters and low-flying planes.

       They are instrumental in protecting troops and critical assets from airborne attacks.

1. Fire-and-Forget:

       Stinger missiles are known for their fire-and-forget capability, meaning once fired, they autonomously track and engage their target without requiring continuous guidance.

 

2. Effectiveness:

       Stinger missiles are highly effective in swiftly neutralizing airborne threats, enhancing operational flexibility and response capabilities.

 

Deployment in India:

       India has approved the acquisition of an Integrated Air Defence Weapon System (IADWS), which includes the deployment of Stinger missiles.

       This initiative aims to modernize India’s armed forces and bolster its air defense capabilities.
