News: Siberian Rubythroat recorded in the Nilgiris 

What's in the news?

       A rare winter migrant, Siberian Rubythroat (Calliope calliope), has been recorded in the Nilgiris.

Siberian Rubythroat:

       The Siberian rubythroat is a ground-loving songbird.

       The male has a red throat edged with a narrow black border and a broad white border.

       Females lack brightly coloured throat and borders.

       Each year, bird watchers from across south India watch for winter migrants to the Nilgiris. 

Habitat:

       The bird, which breeds in the coniferous forests of Siberia, is known to winter in Thailand, India, Indonesia and Bangladesh.

       It can be found in open grasslands, scrub and thickets, up to 1,500 metres of elevation.

       It is fairly terrestrial and forages on the ground and in bushes.

Migration:

       During the summer they are found as breeding birds in Siberia.

       They move to eastern India, Thailand, Indonesia, and other nearby countries for the winter.

IUCN Status: Least Concern.
