News: Does cash take away the cachet of science awards?

 

What's in the news?

       Rajnish Kumar, professor at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) has won the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar prize for science and technology. The prize recognises persons for their outstanding contributions to human knowledge and progress.

 

Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award:

       The award is named after the late Dr (Sir) Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar, the Founder-Director of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) India and is known as the ‘Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar (SSB)’ Award for Science and Technology.

 

Announced by:

       The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) announced the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award (SSB) for 2022.

 

Significance:

       The SSB prize is awarded annually by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) to recognize remarkable research contributions in the fields of biology, chemistry, environmental science, engineering, mathematics, medicine and physics.

       It is considered the most coveted award in multidisciplinary science in India.

 

Eligibility:

       Any citizen of India engaged in research in any field of science and technology up to the age of 45 years is eligible for the prize.

       Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) working in India are also eligible.

       The prize is awarded on the basis of contributions made through work done in India only during the five years preceding the year of the prize.

 

Disciplines:

Divided into seven disciplines such as

       Biological Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Earth, Atmosphere, Ocean and Planetary Sciences, Engineering Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Medical Sciences and Physical Sciences.

 

Prize Components:

       The SSB prize includes a citation, a plaque and a cash award of ₹5 lakh.

       In addition to the cash award, recipients also receive a monthly stipend of Rs. 15,000 up to the age of 65 years.
