WHAT’S  IN THE NEWS ?

Nanjarayan Bird Sanctuary

  • Location: Tiruppur district, Tamil Nadu.
  • Significance: Important habitat for avian biodiversity, especially waterfowl.
  • Naming: Named after Nanjarayan, a local deity associated with bird and animal welfare.

 

Kazhuveli Bird Sanctuary

  • Location: Villupuram district, Tamil Nadu.
  • Importance: Provides essential habitat for various bird species, including migratory birds.

 

Ramsar Sites in Tamil Nadu

  • Recent Additions: Nanjarayan and Kazhuveli Bird Sanctuaries.
  • Significance: Tamil Nadu now has 18 Ramsar sites, the highest number in India.

 

Tawa Reservoir

  • Location: Narmadapuram district, Madhya Pradesh.
  • Importance: Vital ecosystem for biodiversity, water purification, and flood control.

 

Ramsar Convention

  • Definition: An international treaty for the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands.
  • Adopted: Ramsar, Iran, 1971; effective from 1975.
  • India's Participation: Party to the Convention since 1982.
  • Ramsar Sites: Wetlands designated under this treaty for their international importance.

 

Ramsar Site Criteria

  • Supports vulnerable, endangered, or critically endangered species.
  • Hosts threatened ecological communities.
  • Regularly supports 20,000 or more waterbirds.
  • Important for fish as a food source, spawning grounds, and nursery.
