News: Law Commission presents roadmap on ‘One Nation, One Election’ to Ram Nath Kovind-led panel

 

What's in the news?

       The Law Commission suggested a roadmap, which includes proposed changes to the Constitution for holding simultaneous elections, before a high-level committee headed by former President of India Ram Nath Kovind.

 

Key takeaways:

       The panel has also been officially renamed the High Level Committee (HLC) on One Nation, One Election, a Law Ministry release said.

       The statement also said the HLC had “noted” the resignation of Adhir Ranjan Choudhury, leader of the single largest party in the Lok Sabha, from membership of the committee.

 

Objective:

       The primary goal of the committee is to explore the feasibility of implementing “one nation, one election.”

Head of the Committee:

       The committee is led by Ram Nath Kovind, the former President of India.

 

Members of the Committee:

       Amit Shah - Minister of Home Affairs and Minister of Cooperation, Government of India

       Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury - Leader of Single Largest Party in Opposition, Lok Sabha

       Ghulam Nabi Azad - Former Leader of Opposition, Rajya Sabha

       NK Singh - Former Chairman of the 15th Finance Commission

       Subhash C. Kashyap - Former Secretary General, Lok Sabha

       Harish Salve - Senior Advocate

       Sanjay Kothari - Former Chief Vigilance Commissioner

       Apart from the members, Niten Chandra, Secretary to the Government of India, Department of Legal Affairs has been appointed as the secretary to the committee.

       Arjun Ram Meghwal, Minister of State (Independent Charge) Ministry of Law and Justice, Government of India shall attend the meetings of the HLC as Special Invitee.
