News: Tizu Zunki River to be harnessed for Economic Development
of Nagaland, to enable Cargo & Passenger Transport
What’s in the News?
The Union Minister of Ports,
Shipping & Waterways and the Chief Minister of Nagaland announced
transformative initiatives to develop Nagaland's waterways during a
Stakeholder's Conference in Dimapur.
Development of Tizu Zunki (National Waterways 101):
·
The Inland Waterways Authority of India
(IWAI) and the Transport Department of Nagaland will conduct a feasibility
study for developing fairways, skill development, and vessel procurement for
Inland Water Transport.
·
The Tizu River flows into the Chindwin
River, the third-largest tributary of Myanmar's Irrawaddy River, and eventually
into the Andaman Sea, facilitating cargo movement from Northeast India to
international trade routes.
·
This aligns with PM’s vision of
waterways as an economical, sustainable, and efficient transportation mode.
Tourism Initiatives:
·
Plans include developing the Doyang
River Lake with community jetties and studying the feasibility of Ro-Pax
ferries to boost tourism.
Maritime Skill Development:
·
Local youth are encouraged to train at
the Maritime Skill Development Centre to promote employment in the marine
sector.
Kaladan Multimodal Transit Transport Project:
·
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping &
Waterways, through IWAI, is working on various projects in the region,
including linking NW 2 and NW 16 with the Indo-Bangladesh Protocol Route
(IBPR), developing fairways on IBPR, and declaring Ports of Call.
