What's in the news?

       One of the most spectacular folk art forms in India, with choreography drawn from folk and classical dance movements and martial arts, Purulia Chhau recently visited Singapore to take part in ‘A Tapestry of Sacred Music’ festival.

 

Purulia Chau:

       It is a vibrant and culturally significant folk dance form originating from the Purulia district of West Bengal, India.

       It is renowned for its captivating blend of martial arts, acrobatics and theatrical elements, making it a unique and visually stunning performance art.

       It holds deep roots in the rich heritage and traditions of the region, with its origins dating back centuries.

       It is primarily performed during festive occasions, religious ceremonies, and cultural events, captivating audiences with its intricate movements and elaborate costumes.

 

Origin:

       It traces its origins to the traditional martial arts practices of the region, which were later infused with elements of dance and drama.

 

Distinctive Features:

       One of the most striking features of the art is its use of elaborate masks, vibrant costumes, and props such as swords and shields.

       These elements add a dramatic flair to the performances, enhancing the visual appeal.

 

Influence of Nature:

       The dance often draws inspiration from nature, with movements mimicking the graceful movements of animals like the peacock or the tiger, as well as depicting scenes from rural life and mythology.

 

Music and Instruments:

       The accompanying music is typically provided by traditional instruments like the dhol (drum), dhamsa (a type of drum) and flute.

       The rhythmic beats and melodies add depth and energy to the performances.

 

Costumes and Masks:

       Performers don intricately crafted masks and costumes, often representing characters from Hindu mythology such as gods, goddesses, demons, and animals.

       These visually stunning costumes contribute to the immersive experience of the dance.

 

Acrobatic Movements:

       It is characterized by its dynamic and acrobatic movements, including leaps, spins, and agile footwork.

       These movements require exceptional skill and agility from the dancers, captivating audiences with their athleticism and grace.

 

Inclusion in UNESCO List:

       In 2010, the Chhau dance, including Purulia Chhau, was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, acknowledging its significance and cultural value.
