Indian Navy Submarine Projects and Fleet Overview
Current Projects
- Project-75:
- Objective: Indigenous
construction of six Scorpene-class diesel-electric attack submarines.
- Status:
- Commissioned:
INS Kalvari, INS Khanderi, INS Karanj, INS Vela (2017-2021).
- Recent: INS Vagir
commissioned; INS Vagsheer in sea trials.
- Project-76:
- Objective: Development of
submarines with substantial indigenous content, including weapons, combat
systems, and electronic warfare suites.
Submarine Fleet
- Nuclear-Powered Submarines:
- SSBNs (Ballistic Missile Submarines): INS Arihant-class, armed with nuclear missiles.
- SSNs (Attack Submarines):
INS Chakra-class, leased from Russia for long-range patrols and anti-ship
operations.
- Conventional Submarines:
- SSKs (Diesel-Electric Attack Submarines):
- Kalvari Class:
Scorpène-class submarines built under Project-75.
- Sindhughosh Class:
Russian Kilo-class, with a displacement of 3,000 tonnes and a top speed
of 18 knots.
- Shishumar Class:
German Type 1500, with a displacement of 1,660 tons and a top speed of
22 knots.

- Kilo-class: 7
- HDW-class: 4
- Scorpène-class: 5
- Base Locations:
Visakhapatnam (east coast), Mumbai (west coast).
Significance
- Role: Protect maritime interests, maintain
sea lines of communication, provide deterrence.
- Modernization: Ongoing
projects to enhance capabilities and expand the fleet to address security
challenges.
