News: 231 bird species spotted at Periyar Tiger Reserve in survey

 

What's in the news?

       Authorities have confirmed the presence of a migratory bird for the first time inside the Periyar Tiger Reserve (PTR).

       The fourth bird survey held at the PTR has spotted 231 bird species in total, including 14 threatened and 20 endemic species.

       The Kashmir flycatcher is an insectivorous species that breeds in the northwest Himalayas.

       In the survey, the Orange-breasted green pigeon was also spotted at the PTR after a gap of 100 years.

 

Periyar National Park:

       Periyar National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary (PNP) is a protected area near Thekkady in the districts of Idukki, Kottayam and Pathanamthitta in Kerala.

       It is notable as an elephant reserve and a tiger reserve.

 

Features:

       The park is a repository of rare, endemic and endangered flora and fauna and forms the major watershed of two important rivers of Kerala, the Periyar and the Pamba.

       The park is often called the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary or Thekkady. It is located high in the Cardamom Hills and Pandalam Hills of the south Western Ghats along the border with Tamil Nadu.

       Sabarimala Temple complex is located inside the Periyar Tiger Reserve.
