News: World’s rhythms, a delectable India at Chhattisgarh’s National Tribal Dance Festival

What's in the news?

       The National Tribal Dance Festival has begun in Raipur, the capital of Chhattisgarh. The inaugural function was presided over by Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel.

       The National Tribal Dance Festival is being organized in Chhattisgarh for the first time.

       More than 1300 participants from 25 states & UTS of the country and six countries are participating in this three-day dance fest. These folk dance teams will present their respective folk art cultures.

National Tribal Dance Festival:

       With performances, competitions and displays of folk culture, the festival at Science College has so far attracted nearly 1 lakh people.

       Nearly 1,500 dancers from across India and countries like Mozambique, Mongolia, Tonga, Russia, Indonesia, Maldives, Serbia, New Zealand and Egypt arrived for the festival.

       The competitions were split into the categories of ‘traditional’ and ‘familial’ dances, and each troupe participated in both categories.

Objective:

       The objective of this festival is to protect the age-old traditions and rights of tribals and promote it across the world.

       To use art, culture and tourism as a strong resource in the social and economic empowerment of forest dwellers, tribals, farmers, villagers and deprived people.

       It is a folk dance of the Banjara tribe.

       Lambadi folk dance is performed mainly by women to seek blessing from god for a good harvest.

       Lambadi is a mix of Rajasthan and Telangana cultures.

       Banjara Tribe:

       Banjara or Lambadi is a nomadic trading tribe.

       They have roots in Rajasthan but settled in several states of India.

       They speak Lambada dialect (a combination of Sanskrit, Rajasthani and Gujarati).

2. Siddi tribes:

       Siddi Tribe also performed a cultural dance at the festival.

       Siddi Tribe is an African-origin tribe settled in India.

       They came to India 850 years ago.

       Siddis are found in concentrations in Karnataka and Gujarat.
