News: NTH Gets Licence to Test & Certify Drones; To Prove Boon for Manufacturers

 

What's in the news?

       The Centre's National Test House (NTH) will set up testing capabilities for testing electric vehicles and systems from next fiscal year.

 

National Test House (NTH):

       NTH originated in the year 1912, as "Government Test House" at Alipore, Calcutta.

       National Test House (NTH) is a premier Scientific Organization engaged in Testing, Calibration and Quality evaluation of raw material and finished product for the last 109 years.

 

Parent Ministry:

       It is functioning as a subordinate office under the Department of Consumer Affairs, Ministry of Consumers Affairs, Food & Public Distribution.

 

Objective:

       NTH functions with the primary objective of assisting and guiding the indigenous manufacturers on the production of Engineering goods with Quality Testing.

       Now, during this Amrit Kaal and with the changing world scenario, as our country moves towards the goal of self-reliance, NTH is contributing by providing dedicated services to various nation building projects.

 

Key takeaways:

       It is part of the new initiatives undertaken to make NTH future-ready and garner revenues of ₹30 crore by FY 2024.

       BIS formulates the performance standards for EV batteries.

       Currently, the International Centre for Automotive Technology and the Automatic Research Association of India (ARAI) provide testing facilities for electric vehicles.

 

Initiatives for NTH:

       Gati Shakti portal will be used to identify gaps in testing infrastructure in the country.

       NTH will set up a state-of-the-art transformer testing facility in Jaipur, Rajasthan.

       NTH is registered in the Government eMarket (GeM) as a service provider in the category "Testing and Calibration Service" to meet the testing needs.

       It is also expanding its services for water testing and fertilizer testing.

       It is also strengthening its presence in the north-eastern region.
