NEWS: Why
is strengthening fisheries extension services crucial?
WHAT’S
IN THE NEWS?
India's
fisheries sector plays a crucial role in providing livelihoods to millions,
with significant growth in production. Strengthening extension services through
initiatives like Matsya Seva Kendras and Sagar Mitras is essential for
sustainable development and capacity building in the sector.
India’s Fisheries and Aquaculture Sector
- India’s fisheries sector
provides livelihood to about 30 million fishers and fish farmers.
- Fish production increased
by 83% from 2013-14 to 2022-23, reaching 175 lakh tons.
- Inland fisheries
contribute 75% of total fish production, making India the second-largest
global producer.
Need for Strengthening Extension Services
- Experts recommend
strengthening fisheries extension services to ensure sustainable growth.
- Services should focus on
training, disease management, water quality, and improved species for sustainable
practices.
Matsya Seva Kendras (MSKs)
- Supported by the Pradhan
Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana, MSKs provide services by trained
professionals.
- MSKs focus on capacity
building, disease testing, and promoting sustainable practices in both
inland and marine fisheries.
- 102 MSKs have been
established with government assistance, particularly for women and weaker
sections.
Role of Sagar Mitras
- Sagar Mitras act as
intermediaries between the government and coastal fishers.
- They collect data on
marine catches, market needs, and share vital information on regulations,
weather forecasts, and hygiene.
Improving Extension Services
- Digital platforms like
AquaBazaar are improving outreach and capacity building for fishers.
- A World Bank project aims
to create digital identities for fishers to enhance extension services.
