News: Petronet LNG to supply gas to Sri Lanka

What's in the news?

Petronet will supply liquefied natural gas (LNG), to Sri Lanka, beginning 2025, which will be utilised to run power plans with 300MW capacity.

Key takeaways:

Initially, the LNG will be supplied through containers, and later the state run company will establish a Floating Storage Re-gasification Unit (FSRU), in the island nation.

Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG):

It is a natural gas composed of mainly methane (CH4), with some mixture of ethane, (C2H6) which has been cooled down to liquid form for ease and safety of non-pressurized storage or transport.

Process:

The natural gas is condensed into a liquid form at close to atmospheric pressure by cooling it to approximately −162 °C (−260 °F)

Nature:

It is odourless, colourless, non-toxic and non-corrosive.

The volume of natural gas in its liquid state is about 600 times smaller than its volume in its gaseous state.

Applications:

Power generation, Energy Storage, Transportation, Industrial usage, etc.

Significance of LNG:

1. Reduce Oil Import Bill:

A switch to Liquefied Natural Gas from diesel (10 percent of new diesel vehicles switched to LNG by 2032) could result in the reduction in oil import bill by $1.5 billion by the year 2032

2. Reduce Tank-to-wheel Emissions:

The HDV sector alone contributes up to 66 percent of the particulate matter from the road transport sector, therefore switching to Liquefied Natural Gas will improve air pollution in cities.
