LIQUIFIED NATURAL GAS: ECONOMY
NEWS: India imported 2.60 million tonnes (mt) of LNG in June, the highest in
the last 44 months.
WHAT’S IN THE NEWS?
Key Points:
- Power Generation from
Gas-Based Units:
- In June 2024, India’s power
generation from gas-based units was 4.60 billion units.
- This is nearly 52% higher
than the 3.03 billion units generated in June 2023.
- Gas-based power generation
capacity accounts for 5.6% of India’s overall installed generation
capacity.
- Liquified Natural Gas (LNG):
- Natural gas is primarily
composed of methane, with small amounts of other gases like ethane,
propane, butane, and pentane.
- LNG is produced by cooling
natural gas to around -161 degrees Celsius (-259 Fahrenheit), converting
it into a liquid state.
- The liquefaction process
reduces the gas to 1/600th of its original volume, making it easier and
more efficient to transport.
- LNG is half the weight of
water in its liquid state.
