LIQUIFIED NATURAL GAS: ECONOMY

NEWS: India imported 2.60 million tonnes (mt) of LNG in June, the highest in the last 44 months.

WHAT’S IN THE NEWS?

Key Points:

  • Power Generation from Gas-Based Units:
    • In June 2024, India’s power generation from gas-based units was 4.60 billion units.
    • This is nearly 52% higher than the 3.03 billion units generated in June 2023.
    • Gas-based power generation capacity accounts for 5.6% of India’s overall installed generation capacity.
  • Liquified Natural Gas (LNG):
    • Natural gas is primarily composed of methane, with small amounts of other gases like ethane, propane, butane, and pentane.
    • LNG is produced by cooling natural gas to around -161 degrees Celsius (-259 Fahrenheit), converting it into a liquid state.
    • The liquefaction process reduces the gas to 1/600th of its original volume, making it easier and more efficient to transport.
    • LNG is half the weight of water in its liquid state.
