News: Kui language inclusion in 8th schedule gets approval of Odisha govt

 

What's in the news?

       The Odisha Cabinet has approved a proposal to recommend the inclusion of the Kui language in the Eighth schedule of the Constitution of India.

 

Kui Language:

       Kui is a South-Eastern Dravidian language spoken by the Khonds (also spelt Kondha and Kandha) community.

 

Features:

       It is primarily spoken in the state of Odisha. It is traditionally written using the Odia script.

       It is closely related to other languages in the Dravidian family such as Gondi and Kuvi.

       It was also referred to as the Kuinga language during the historical period.

 

General Characteristics:

       Absence of words that signify the higher forms of thought. Hence, there are no abstract nouns to express an ideal entity as existing separate and distinct from a concrete object.

       Inadequate number of words to mark and differentiate between the various kinds of moral qualities and the various forms of higher activities.

       Absence of any systematic attempt by the addition of formative particles as in the literary languages

       to draw a distinction between the substantival and verbal forms of words.

       to discriminate between the intransitive and transitive signification of verbs and the substantial adjectival forms of nouns.

       to form a group of related words from a common generic root.
