News: Govt. to prepare inventory of land use adjacent to Kolleru wildlife sanctuary

 

What's in the news?

       The Wildlife Division of the Andhra Pradesh Forest Department is all set to prepare an inventory of land use and other activities adjacent to the Kolleru Wildlife Sanctuary for declaring it an eco-sensitive zone (ESZ) for conservation of the Kolleru Lake ecosystem.

       It is mandatory in order for the site to be declared as an eco-sensitive zone.

 

Kolleru Lake:

       It is the largest freshwater lake in Andhra Pradesh, India.

       It is located between Krishna and Godavari deltas.

 

Unique Features:

       The lake has been declared as a wildlife sanctuary under India’s Wildlife Protection Act of 1972.

       It is also designated a wetland of international importance under the   International Ramsar Convention.

 

Site for Birds:

Migratory Birds:

       It is an important site for migratory birds including Siberian crane, ibis, red-crested pochards, black winged stilts, avocets, common red shanks, wigeons, gadwalls and cormorants, garganeys, herons, flamingos, and painted storks.

 

Resident Birds:

       Grey pelicans, Asian open-billed storks, painted storks, glossy ibises, white ibises, teals, pintails and shovellers.
