News: Rajni Shirke Gets National Award for Weaving Warps and Wefts Of ‘Kashidakari’ Art

 

What's in the news?

       There used to be a time when circular frames, cutters, needles and colourful threads would be in the list of essentials for every household that had at least one woman of the family used to do hand embroidery. ‘Kashidakari’, the art of hand embroidery, is, unfortunately, dying a slow death.

 

Kashidakari Work:

       Kashidakari work is done majorly on objects associated with marriage, especially gift items and makes use of mirror work along with dense Kashidakari work and rich colours.

 

Meghwal:

       The Meghwal is a community of Rajasthan which is specifically around Bikaner practises Kashidakari Craft.

       Local women artisans practice this craft and each related community uses its own combination of materials, techniques and motifs.

 

Meghwal Kashidakari’s motifs:

       Meghwal Kashidakari’s motifs are predominantly geometric.

       The Meghwal Kashidakari job comes in two varieties such as

       Kachcho (temporary)

       Pako (permanent)
