Recently, the Minister for Power and
Renewable Energy RK Singh said that China was welcome to be part of the
International Solar Alliance (ISA), as the membership of the 116-country
compact was open to all.
About
International Solar Alliance:
●
The International Solar Alliance (ISA) is
an intergovernmental organization.
●
It was founded in 2015 by India and France to work for the efficient
consumption and use of solar energy to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
●
Headquarters:
Gurugram, India.
●
Members:
Total, 116 countries signed the
framework agreement.
○
All the United Nations Members are
eligible to join the alliance.
●
Aim:
○
Identify and address significant
challenges to scaling up solar energy applications.
○
Amass financial investments of about US
dollars 1000 billion (by 2030)
○
Synchronized action by promoting voluntary
programs on solar energy R&D, financing, technology, etc.
○
Promote financing for solar energy
adoption by bringing down the cost of capital
○
Promote the adoption of solar energy in
member countries.
○
Encourage the creation of a shared cyber
platform for networking, collaboration, and idea-sharing.

Structure:
○
The ISA
Assembly is the highest
decision-making body. It has representatives from all member countries.
○
The ISA Secretariat is headed by the
Director-General, who is appointed for a 4-year term.
