OCEAN ENERGY ATLAS : GEOGRAPHY
NEWS
:
India could generate up to 9.2 lakh TWh from its blue renewable energy sources:
INCOIS
WHAT’S
IN THE NEWS ?
The Integrated Ocean Energy Atlas provides estimated
values of renewable energy that can be generated from either individual or
integrated blue renewable sources at potential sites along the coast.
Blue
Renewable Energy Mapping in India:
- Potential Sites Identified: Indian oceanographers
mapped sites along India's coastline for blue renewable energy (tidal
waves, ocean currents).
- Integrated Ocean Energy
Atlas:
Developed by INCOIS to estimate renewable energy potential across India's
Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), extending 220 km from the coast.
- Energy Potential: India's EEZ has an
estimated potential of 9.2 lakh Terawatt hours (TWh) from blue energy
sources.
- Untapped Resources: Offshore energy from sun,
wind, tides, waves, and ocean thermals is underutilized, crucial for
India’s blue economy and net-zero goals.
- Comprehensive Data: The atlas is based on
20-30 years of weather models, in-situ data, and satellite observations.
- Industry Utility: The atlas aids renewable
energy industries in planning and optimizing blue energy resource
utilization.
