NEWS:  Four-ringed butterfly resurfaces in India

 

WHAT’S IN THE NEWS?

Arunachal Pradesh policeman was among four who recorded the elusive Ypthima cantliei in Namdapha National Park, the country’s easternmost tiger reserve, bordering Myanmar.

 

Great Four-Ring Butterfly

  • Photographed during a 2018-19 survey in Miao range, Namdapha National Park.
  • Last observed in 1957 in Margherita, eastern Assam.

 

Ypthima Species in India

  • 35 species recorded in India.
  • 23 species found in Northeast India.
  • Significant diversity in China (Yunnan and Sichuan), Nepal, Bhutan, and Myanmar.

 

Namdapha National Park - Key Facts

  • Location: Arunachal Pradesh, India.
  • Bordered by Patkai hills (south and southeast) and Himalayas (north).
  • Spans Dapha bum range of Mishmi Hills and Patkai range.
  • Covers Palearctic and Indo-Malayan biogeographic areas.
  • Named after Namdapha River, flowing from Daphabum to Noa-Dehing River.
  • Unique for hosting all four big feline species: Tiger, Leopard, Snow Leopard, Clouded Leopard.

Diverse ecosystems: evergreen, moist deciduous, sub-tropical, temperate forests, and alpine environments.
