Colombo Process:

Overview

  • Type: Regional Consultative Process
  • Members: 12 Member States from Asia
  • Purpose: Platform for consultations on overseas employment and contractual labor management.
  • Nature: Non-binding, consensus-based decision-making.
  • Coordination: Through Permanent Missions of Member States at the UN in Geneva.
  • India's Membership: Since inception in 2003.

India’s Chairmanship (2024-26) Priorities

  1. Financial Sustainability: Review the financial sustainability of the Colombo Process.
  2. Membership Expansion: Broaden membership by including new member states and observers.
  3. Technical Collaboration: Reconfigure technical-level collaborations.
  4. Chairmanship Rotation: Implement a structured rotation for the chairmanship.
  5. GCM Review: Conduct a regional review of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration (GCM).
  6. Dialogue Engagement: Engage in dialogues with the Abu Dhabi Dialogue (ADD) and other regional processes.
