Aurorae Sightings in Ladakh Validate Space Weather Tracking Efforts
WHAT’S
IN THE NEWS ?
While aurorae are known for their scenic beauty, their
occurrence in lower-latitude regions like Ladakh is an indication of heightened
solar activity
The recent sightings
of aurorae in Ladakh, typically observed in far northern
regions, have validated India’s space weather tracking efforts. A team of
Indian astrophysicists predicted the event 48-72 hours in advance, showcasing
progress in forecasting space weather, which can have significant effects on
satellite-based services.
- Auroral Sightings in Ladakh: Occurred on October 10-11,
following similar events in May 2023 and in 2022.
- Recorded by Cameras: All-sky cameras operated by
the Indian Institute of Astrophysics in Hanle and Merak captured the
auroras.
- Space Weather Monitoring: Astrophysicists predicted
the auroras 48-72 hours in advance, showcasing advancements in space
weather prediction.
- Cause: Auroras in Ladakh, a lower-latitude region,
are linked to heightened solar activity and coronal mass ejections (CMEs).
- Solar Cycle: The sun's 11-year activity
cycle is expected to peak in 2024, increasing the likelihood of solar
storms.
