News: Medium-range ballistic missile Agni-1 test-fired in Odisha

 

What is in the news?

       Recently, A successful training launch of a medium-range ballistic missile, Agni-1 was carried out by the Strategic Forces Command from APJ Abdul Kalam Island, Odisha.

 

What is Agni-1 prime missile?

       It is a nuclear capable ballistic missile.

       The “training launch” of the Agni-1, was conducted by the tri-service Strategic Forces Command.

       Strike range of the missile is 700 km.

       It is capable of striking targets with a very high degree of precision.

       It was developed by the Defence Research and Development Organization.

 

Tri Services Strategic Forces Command:

       The Strategic Forces Command, which was set up to handle the country’s nuclear arsenal in 2003.

 

Nuclear Missiles in India:

       Prithvi-II - 350 km range

       Agni-1 - 700 km

       Agni-2 - 2,000-km

       Agni-3 - 3,000-km

       Agni-4 - 4,000-km

       Agni-5 - over 5,000-km

 

Agni missile system:

       It was developed under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme.

       Types of Missiles:

       Agni I: Range of 700-800 km.

       Agni II: Range more than 2000 km.

       Agni III: Range of more than 2,500 Km

       Agni IV: Range is more than 3,500 km and can fire from a road mobile launcher.

       Agni-V: The longest of the Agni series, an Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) with a range of over 5,000 km.

       Developed by: Agni-1 to 5 missiles are designed & developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
