WHAT’S IN THE NEWS?
Case
Overview:
 - Uttarakhand High Court
     allowed protection to an interfaith couple in a live-in relationship.
 
 - They must register their
     relationship under the new Uniform Civil Code (UCC) within 48 hours.
 
Court's
Decision:
 - The couple's protection is ensured
     for six weeks if they apply for registration.
 
Background:
 - A 26-year-old Hindu woman
     and a 21-year-old Muslim man faced threats from the woman's family.
 
 - They live in Dehradun.
 
 Legal
Requirement:
 - Under Section 378(1) of the UCC, live-in partners must register
     their relationship with the registrar.
 
 - Non-compliance may lead to
     up to three months in jail or a fine of up to ₹10,000.
 
Current
Status:
 - The couple applied for
     registration, but the registrar's office refused due to technical reasons.
 
 - Petitions challenging the
     UCC are pending before the Supreme Court.
 
Constitutional
Reference:
 - Article 21 of the
     Constitution guarantees the protection of life and personal liberty.
 
 - Uttarkhand is
     the first state in india to implement UCC.
 
 
ARTICLE 44: Uniform civil code for the citizens
