News: India-U.S. tri-service exercise Tiger Triumph commences

 

What's in the news?

       India and the United States will conduct a bilateral tri-Service Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) Exercise called Tiger Triumph – 24.

 

Key takeaways:

       It will take place on the Eastern Seaboard from March 18 to March 31, 2024.

 

Tiger Triumph:

       It is the first tri-service military exercise between India and the USA.

       India has previously conducted tri-service exercises only with Russia.

Exercise Tiger Triumph-24:

Aim:

       The exercise aims to improve cooperation between the forces of both countries in conducting HADR operations and to refine Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for smoother coordination.

 

Phases of the Exercise:

       The exercise will be conducted in two phases – Harbour Phase and Sea phase

 

1. Harbour Phase:

       It will be carried out at Visakhapatnam. Personnel from both navies will engage in Training Visits, Subject Matter Expert Exchanges, Sports Events, and Social interactions during this time.

 

2. Sea Phase:

       It will be carried out at Kakinada district of Andhra Pradesh. After the Harbour Phase, the ships, carrying troops, will sail for the Sea Phase and conduct Maritime, Amphibious, and HADR operations based on given scenarios.

       Red Flag Exercise: While not exclusively a bilateral exercise between India and the US, the Red Flag Exercise hosted by the United States Air Force at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada often includes participation from the Indian Air Force. This exercise focuses on advanced aerial combat training and tactics.
