WHAT’S IN THE NEWS ? 
Cabinet approves
Amendment in “Pradhan Mantri JI-VAN Yojana” for providing financial support to
Advanced Biofuel Projects using lignocellulosic biomass and other renewable
feedstock
 
Pradhan Mantri JI-VAN Yojana: 
 - Launch:
     March 2019.
 
 - Objective:
     Promote Second Generation (2G) bioethanol production using lignocellulosic
     biomass (e.g., cereal straw, bagasse, forest residues).
 
 - Financial Support:
     Viability Gap Funding (VGF) with a total outlay of Rs. 1969.50 crore
     (2018-19 to 2023-24).
 
 - Implementation:
     Overseen by the Centre for High Technology (CHT), under the Ministry of
     Petroleum and Natural Gas.
 
 - Projects:
     Support for 12 commercial and 10 demonstration 2G Ethanol projects
     (divided into two phases).
 
 - Benefits:
 
 
  - Reduces reliance on food crops by
      using non-food feedstocks.
 
  - Contributes to lower greenhouse gas
      emissions.
 
  - Prevents biomass burning, enhancing
      public health and farmer income.
 
  - Creates jobs and advances 2G Ethanol
      technology.
 
  - Supports waste management and the
      Swachh Bharat Mission.
 
 
 - Background:
     Linked to the Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) programme, aiming for 10%
     ethanol blending with petrol.
 
 
Recent Updates:
 - Enhancement:
     The scheme now includes advanced biofuels from lignocellulosic feedstocks
     and supports “bolt-on” and “brownfield” projects to further boost biofuel
     development and contribute to India's energy security and net-zero
     emissions targets.
