What’s in the news?
Details
 - The
     Palianytsia missile is a long-range drone missile newly developed
     by Ukraine.
 
 - Named
     after a type of Ukrainian bread, “Palianytsia” carries cultural
     significance that has turned it into an symbol of resistance for the
     country. 
 
 - The completion
     of its development was done in 18 months.
 
Need: Western
allies including United States do give Ukraine long-range armaments but rule
out their usage within Russian territory as a result of fear for escalation.
ATACMS missiles could reach at least 250 major military targets across Russia;
however, such restrictions limit the access to just 20 targets for Ukraine’s
strikes. 
 - The
     project involved both private sector inputs and contributions from
     state-owned design bureaus, spurred by a grant program initiated
     by the Ukrainian government.
 
 - In
     addition, faster innovation and production were made possible
     through deregulation of defense industry. 
 
Features
 - The
     missile is launched from a ground-based platform.
 
 - It
     features a turbojet engine.
 
 - The
     Palianytsia has a 700-km range (like ATACMS).
 
 - The
     missile is capable of striking approximately two dozen Russian military airfields.
 
 - It
     is significantly cheaper than similar missiles.
 
 - Ukrainian
     missile drone Palianytsia costs less than US$1 million a piece.
