Current
relevance:
A new wild brinjal species has been
discovered from a remote island of the Andaman
and Nicobar Islands by a researcher from the Botanical Survey of
India.
About wild brinjal:
1.
A new wild brinjal species, Solanum pandeyi, was discovered in
the evergreen forests of Middle Andaman.
2.
It is locally known as “wild orange eggplant”.
3.
Uses:
(i) An
indigenous Negrito tribe, Great
Andamanese, used for food and
medicinal purposes.
(ii) Its seeds and roots used for tooth infection.
(iii) Ripe fruits used to prepare a sour-sweet sauce with jaggery, chilli,
garlic etc.
