in the news?

With 14 major river systems and more than
600 rivers, almost 80 per cent of the subcontinent’s population is dependent on
these water resources for their sustenance – both in terms of food and
occupation.
Namami
Gange:
●      
Namami Gange Programme is an Integrated
Conservation Mission, approved as a
‘Flagship Programme’ by the Union Government in June 2014.
Aim:
●      
Effective abatement of pollution.
●      
Conservation and rejuvenation of National River Ganga.
Vision:
●      
Restoring the Aviral Dhara (Continuous Flow) and Nirmal Dhara (Unpolluted Flow).
Nodal
Ministry:
●      
It is being operated under the Department
of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, Ministry of Jal
Shakti.
Implementation:
●      
The programme is being implemented by the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG)
and its state counterpart organizations i.e State Program Management Groups (SPMGs).
