CYANIDE : SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY
NEWS: A team led by Dr. Ravi Kumar Kanaparthi at Central University of Kerala
has developed a highly sensitive and selective cyanide sensor.

WHAT’S IN THE NEWS ?
Cyanide :
 - Toxicity: Cyanide is a potent toxin
found in plants, fruits, and microorganisms.

 - WHO Guidelines:
Limits cyanide concentration in potable water to below 0.19 mg/L.

New Sensor for Cyanide Detection:
 - Function: Detects cyanide at low
concentrations in drinking water and food products.

 - Visual
Indicator: Changes color from yellow to colorless upon
     cyanide detection.

 - Specificity:
Accurately detects cyanide without interference from other ions.

 Importance:
 - Relevance: Inspired by a recent
incident in Idukki, where 13 cows died from cyanide toxicity.

 - Global
Impact: Aims to prevent cyanide-related deaths and
     enhance public safety.
