Indian
astronomers, along with international collaborators, have reported the rare
discovery of a Blue Straggler Star (BSS)
caught in the process of formation.
Highlights:
About Blue Straggler
Stars:
i.
Blue Straggler Stars are an
unusual class of stars found in star clusters. Compared with other stars in the
same cluster, they appear hotter,
brighter, more massive, younger than expected.
ii.
They are believed to form
either by gaining matter from a
companion star or through the merger of two stars, which increases their
mass and makes them appear rejuvenated. However, direct observational evidence
of these formation processes has remained extremely
rare.
Significance of the
Discovery:
i.
The discovery offers strong direct evidence that Blue
Stragglers can form through mass
transfer between stars in a binary system.
ii.
It explains stellar rejuvenation by showing how an
older star can gain matter and become hotter, brighter and apparently younger.
iii.
The system serves as a valuable natural laboratory for
studying the evolution of interacting binary stars.
iv.
Understanding Blue Straggler
formation helps astronomers assess the age
and evolutionary history of star clusters more accurately.
v. The continuing transfer of matter shows that interactions between binary stars can persist for billions of years.
